Freedom arrived just in time for Nikita and her baby.
For ten years, families on a rural sugarcane farm were trapped in bonded labour. Among them was 21-year-old Nikita, nine months pregnant and caring for two toddlers while being forced to do gruelling physical work. After a worker escaped and alerted authorities, 27 people, including young children, were rescued. The very next day, Nikita gave birth to her baby, this time in freedom. Today, Nikita and her family are beginning a new chapter with the support they need to move forward in safety and dignity.
